You Need A Pelargonium. - Oct 23, 2025
Dear gardening
I'm sitting here having a coffee, you see things here in Queen street, it's theatre. I've just watched Tookie water this tree with her water bottle.
She had one bottle for herself and one for the tree. I watched her water the tree yesterday too, she has adopted this tree.
It's very methodical, she tips the water gently into exactly the same spot. This is the best way to water. This wet patch stays moist and then you keep it moist. The tree's roots grow to this spot.
This is how they grow fruit trees in the desert, only they use drip irrigation. It drips, drips, drips into the same spot.
I love how Tookie has adopted this tree. It's so dry at the moment we all need to adopt a tree. Council may have planted trees near where you live. It's so easy to take a bottle when you go for a walk. That little bottle could save that tree.
Councils plant trees in the cooler months, hoping it rains enough to get them established before the heat comes. It's a big job to water them when conditions turn dry. They need our help.
If they've planted a street tree outside your house adopt it. Mulch around the base with Woodchip and give it a bucket of water once a week. That will be enough to keep it alive.
That tree will reward you with shade and privacy. You'll hear birds, trees attract nature. The sounds of nature make us feel good.
It's not hard, it just becomes something you do, it's like picking up papers. Somebody has to do it, somebody could be you.
Spotted this Leucospermum cordifolium flowering in a garden in Narellan yesterday. It was absolutely covered in these amazing bird attracting flowers.
These hardy shrubs come from Africa but they are related to Grevilleas so they are happy to grow here too.
They grow 1.5ms high by 1.5ms wide and they flower from late winter into spring. They come in other colours too. We have a nice selection here, every garden needs one of these.
Come see.
Yes they look like Azaleas but these are Regal Pelargoniums. I bought them by accident. It was my day off so I didn't have my suppliers notes, so I Google searched Geraniums and this lovely guy answered the phone, "Do I buy my Geraniums from you?" I asked.
You haven't bought Geraniums from me for 15 years he said, I don't know why, I grow the Regal Pelargoniums here, you should have them, they are amazing.
Well I didn't know what to say, I already buy Geraniums off about three different suppliers, what was I going to say to him?
But he sounded so nice, and I did remember how much I love Regal Pelargoniums, so I ordered 8 trays. He was going to keep them for me, until they grew bigger and had more flowers.
Well they arrived last week, they were so beautiful and so big, I potted them on into 200mm pots using Tim's Best Potting mix. It's incredible what potting plants on, into Tim's Best Potting mix, does to a plant.
The extra potting mix catches more water, the 7 month fertiliser starts to release and the plants literally double in size within 14 days, at this time of year.
These beautiful Regal Pelargoniums flower like this right through spring and early summer. They flower 5 times longer than Azaleas and they look after themselves!!!
They can be grown in pots or gardens, they need about 6 hours of sun a day to thrive. The colours really are spectacular, I've fallen in love with them.
Once you own one, you can easily grow more from cuttings, you could quickly become a Pelargonium Collector.
Start your collection here today.
Beautiful plants cost $29.99.
Put one in a pot, it will make you happy!
A big shout out to Adam J Watson The Plumber, who found our leaking pipe, and fixed it today. It may have been leaking for 20 years or more, he made me so happy. Our water bill has been through the roof.
We are expecting our irrigation system to work so much better now, our plants will notice the extra water, water is life in a nursery, especially when it's getting so dry.
Adam never gave up, I was chucking tantrums.
We had some laughs too, thank you Adam.
Happy gardening
Tim
