Do You Need A Haircut? - Feb 06, 2026

Dear gardening friends
It's one of the hardiest ground cover plants on the planet yet it's still relatively unknown to gardeners.
Tricolour Chinese Star Jasmine has green, pink and white markings on the leaves so it always looks colourful.

It thrives in full sun or part shade, it's almost death proof once established. It takes cold or heat. It can grow in the ground or in pots using Tim's Best Potting mix.

It can be pruned into a border or let it just grow wild like here in this photo. One plant will cover 1m2. It's perfect for growing under trees too.
We have them for $18.99.

OMG The Giant Avocado JALA is back in stock. This Giant fruiting Avocado tree was bred in Australia. The fruit can weigh over 1kg. It has beautiful glossy leaves, it's the most beautiful evergreen shade tree!!!!!

You can grow it in a big pot using Tim's Best Potting mix and prune to size. Or grow it in your garden and you'll have a beautiful shade tree that also provides you with an endless supply of huge Avocados.

It's self pollinating so you only need one tree. It grows super fast during the warmer months. Plant it on a mound of Tim's Best Potting mix. Dig a bag or two into your soil and make a mound. Dig a hole in this to plant your tree. Avocados need good drainage. Mulch around the base with Sugarcane or Woodchip.

These amazing trees cost $99.95. Only one nursery in Australia grows them so they are so hard to find.
No holds without payment sorry.

I often drive past this Hairdresser in Dumaresq st in Campbelltown, and there's nearly always someone sitting under this native tree. They have a little fold up chair and they sit in the shade of this beautiful glossy green tree. They sit here and wait for customers to arrive.

Today I stopped to talk to Michael, he was lovely, he met me with a smile, I've never met him before. I asked him if he'd mind if I take his photo, I love trees I told him, and this tree has a story.

He was happy for me to do that, "But I think you need a haircut" he advised me. I think you're right, how much to you charge for a crew cut? "How much do you want to pay me?" We were friends straight away.

Michael told me he is from Iraq, all the hairdressers here are from Iraq. They work 7 days a week. He tells me people in Iraq often get their haircut twice a week!!!

He came here via Lebanon with his family, they were escaping war. He loves it here, he loves everything about Australia he told me. There must be something you don't like?

"No I love everything, your country has been so kind, you are kind here. My father has had many operations since he's been here, this country is amazing."

I noticed you love sitting under that tree out the front? "Yes we all do, we sit out there in the shade, it's cool, it's beautiful, we don't have a lot of trees where we come from."

This is a native tree but it was bred to have much shinier green leaves, it's called Tristaniopsis laurina "Luscious". They have been recently planted in the precinct and they are thriving.

This lollipop looking smaller growing tree, should be planted everywhere. It has fragrant yellow flowers which the birds and bees like too.

Micheal charms me, he finds hair I didn't know I owned, in my ears it's like a bee buzzing, I get my eyebrows done too. I can probably walk faster now.

Trees can take you to all kinds of places. I've discovered that people who love trees, are usually beautiful people.

My friend sent me this photo of his garden, he's just started using Tim's Rapid Results Lawn Food. This is his front yard. I love it, I love green gardens, i find this very soothing.

A hedge of Murraya along the front boundary gives you privacy from the street. You can still say hello to your neighbours, but they can't just walk in. A hedge this high still lets the sunshine into your garden.

He's planted two Magnolias in the lawn, they have a raised metal edging around them to contain the soil and the mulch, and it stops the grass growing into the garden.

All the gardens are raised up with good soil, you don't need much, it just gives the plants something to grow roots into, to get started. All the gardens are mulched.
This stops the weeds from growing and it shields the soil from the hot sun. Mulch helps stop water, from evaporating.

He has a Buxus hedge along the front of the house with a Jasmine Tricolour border in front. This garden looks good all year round. As spring arrives, everything goes even greener!!!!

It's the hedges and the trees that give you privacy from houses across the road, and from people walking past, or getting out of the car. If you've got kids you've got a fenced off garden, but there's no fences.

This garden would require a lot of work, you'd have to trim the hedges every 4 weeks in the warmer months. You'd have to water your garden with a lawn sprinkler to have it looking this good.

But what you create around your house is a green zone that helps cool your house. There's no paving or heat zones here. Lay on the grass on a hot day and you'll feel coolness pass through your body.

This garden would work perfectly for newer houses with smaller gardens too. Everything is just on a smaller scale.

You could add colour to your garden with big pots full of flowers, to keep the bees and the pollinators happy.

Happy gardening
Tim
