It’s Time To Spray Your Lawn! - Jun 12, 2025
Dear gardening friends
We've been busy potting up New Season Rose bushes. It's like wrestling with barbed wire, but we all get stuck in, and get the job done. We've just potted up 1500 plants using Tim's Best Potting mix. Tylor was like a potting machine yesterday, he doesn't even wear gloves, "I don't need them, I'm so tough".
My gloves have seen better days, but I just can't seem to retire them. I've had these for at least 5 years, I use them to unload Christmas trees too.
One of our customers came in today, he imports gloves from China, and sells them all around Australia. I asked him to bring me a new pair of gloves, he laughed.
"I'll get you a pair with your name on them" was his reply.
We have all your favourite Roses bushes here with lots of new ones. But it's hard to beat the Big 5. Mr Lincoln, Double Delight, Blue moon, Just Joey and Pope John Paul. They are still the biggest sellers.
They have amazing fragrance!!!!
We have The Macarthur Rose back in stock too.
It has the most amazing huge Red roses, on long stems, that are perfect for picking, it's petalicious.
Yes it has a fragrance.
This year we have heaps of David Austin Roses.
They are bred to make noses happy.
This Fire Sticks Euphorbia just looked so amazing yesterday, as we were closing up. Light, just as the sun goes down brings out the colours, it's my favourite time of day.
This is a Hayden creation.
Fire Sticks colours up in winter, if it's growing in full sun. It really is spectacular. If it's in the shade, it just stays green. I've got one growing as an indoor plant, it's soooo arty!!!
All Euphorbias have a white sap which can cause irritation. It doesn't bother me at all but people and animals can be allergic to different plants.
We have some Euphorbias in stock, they can also be grown from cuttings, use our Tim's Best Potting mix for best results.
Jeff's not happy, he went away for three weeks overseas, and the kids didn't water the plants. His Fiddle leaf Fig has lost most of its leaves, he wants to know how to bring it back to life? He shows me a photo on his phone.
Modern Potting mix is made from Recycled green waste or Pine bark, or a mix so it's essentially made from wood. When this gets dry it becomes hydrophobic. Once this happens it's very hard to get the soil wet again.
If I put this plant in a bucket of water the pot would float. Yes it would be like a boat. Eventually the potting mix would start to accept water, bubbles would appear, as the air in the potting mix, was replaced with water. After a couple of minutes the pot would sink. Only now will it accept water again.
This Ficus isn't going to shoot out from the bottom branches unless you chop it back. You'd have to cut it back by at least 25%. Yes it's going to look like bare sticks.
Put the cuttings in a jar of water and they will grow roots and you will get more plants for free. The bare stems will sprout new growth. You can encourage faster growth, by applying Tim's FAST FOOD.
This plant would recover quicker in spring and summer, when the weather is warmer. Indoor plants are tropical plants, so they love the heat.
This plant is still in the same pot as when purchased. If you want your plants to grow bigger then you need to repot them the day you buy them. More potting mix means more water and more nutrients. That's why plants take off when you give them more room.
Unfortunately not all potting mixes being sold are good, some are actually toxic, you may have seen this in our potting mix trial. Tim's Best Potting mix is consistently the best. Come see us.
I get asked gardening questions where ever I go.
I don't mind. Gardening is common sense.
Most of the time the answer is just more water.
Water is the secret to life.
Only 3 degrees this morning in Menangle, my car gave a warning, that there might be ice on the road. It's blanket weather, but we can't stop Tylor wearing shorts.
I got a nice surprise when one of my old/new blankets turned up in the post. It's a Cheviot Travel mate Warrnambool car blanket. I'm becoming a bit of an expert in these Australian made pure wool blankets.
This blanket must be over 40 years old but it still looks and feels like new. They get put in cupboards and get forgotten. They only come out when the people who owned them drop dead. That's when their life long treasures get discovered.
I love the idea of recycling old things especially if they have been made in Australia. I love the furniture from this era too, our house is full of it.
It's not so cold this morning in Queen street with a travel rug on my knees, I don't know why more people don't use them.
It's time to spray Clover and Bindi. I sprayed my lawn yesterday with DART. I used it last year it's amazing. It's a selective weed killer you can use on Buffalo, Couch and Kikuyu.
Mix 50mls in 2-5 litres of water. Add a squirt of dish washing liquid. It makes the spray stick better.
Spray your lawn which you haven't mown for a week or so. Don't mow for 7-10 days after. It's best to spray again the following week to knock Clover on the head. Yes it's hard to kill.
DART even knocks Creeping Oxalis. This is very hard to kill in lawns. Spray when there is no wind please. Lawn has to be dry, so don't spray early in the morning.
The Red Scarfs are back!!!!!! I've had the Scarf factory in full production this week, it was freezing. Come get one, $10.00, bargain.
Happy gardening
Tim
