It’s time to plant fruit trees! - Jun 22, 2018
Free fruit in your backyard?
Dear gardening friends
We have been busy Potting up Roses and Fruit trees in the rain this week. If you’ve ever dreamed of being a nursery person it would have turned into a nightmare this week. We shovelled 18 m3 of Potting Mix with tiny scoops.
It didn’t help when Simon announced he’d been to Costco for the first time on Sunday.
He claimed he hated it because he had never shopped with so many other people.
It reminded me of seagulls fighting over hot chips on Manly beach.
Simon talked us through every product he purchased and managed to relate everything back to Costco throughout the week. He ate at least 20 Cheese Kransky Sausages for lunch, so the idea of bulk buying, should ware off pretty quickly.
We got sick of looking at them.
Surprisingly the Pop Corn he is holding came from Woolies but apparently the packet from Costco is much bigger!
Back to fruit trees. Now is the best time to plant fruit trees and roses. These fruit trees were grown in the ground in Monbulk Victoria. They are dug up in winter then transported bare rooted to nurseries around Australia.
These trees have never been pot bound so they grow much faster and they get fruit faster. We pot them up straight away, because if the roots dry out, the plants die. We use Tim’s Best Potting Mix to give them the best start in life.
Fruit trees you can plant now include Apples, Plums, Cherries, Apricots, Nectarines, Almonds, Pears and Citrus to name but a few.
If you love fruit trees then come and visit us now. If you’re planting Fruit trees don’t just dig a hole in the clay and hope for the best.
Fruit trees hate poor drainage.
For best results plant your fruit trees on a mound of IGC Planting Compost Improved soil. This fantastic product contains Wettasoil, Seaweed, Organic Slow Release Fertiliser and rich black Compost. Mix it with the soil you dig out of the hole. Fill the hole back in, and then plant your tree on the mound.
Mulch around the base with Sugarcane or Tim’s Termite Resistant Woodchip to help prevent moisture loss through evaporation.
Mulch makes your fruit trees grow faster.
Water twice a week with 10 litres of water and your trees will thrive.
Remove flowers for the first season. You don’t want fruit. It stops the tree from growing and it bends the immature branches.
When you are choosing fruit trees just remember some need cross pollination from a compatible variety to produce fruit.
So often I hear people complaining about a tree that never gets fruit.
Talk to our Horticulturists. We will help you choose the right partners.
Campbelltown’s Mayor George Brticevic is winning a few brownie points from tree lovers this week. The tree planting has continued along Gilchrist Drive.
It was great too see Councils “Green Team” out planting Waterhousia floribundas opposite Macarthur Square and then into Englorie Park.
These evergreen native trees are a great choice, and they have been successful in GlenAlpine.
These road islands have been treeless for 20 years or more, so it’s fantastic to see Campbelltown Councils staff planting trees.
There are so many treeless parks and open spaces in Macarthur so it’s only the start, but wouldn’t it be fantastic if George became known as the Mayor who turned Campbelltown green.
“Green George” is so much nicer than “Woodchip George”.
Australia’s secret weapon might be Timmy Cahill but that didn’t stop Pig from warming up just in case he was needed last night.
Pig invented The Bicycle Kick but then some guy called Ronaldo came along and stole his thunder. #ronaldo #bicyclekick #pig #invented #worldcup2018 #australia #socceroos
I spent the weekend exploring Sydney’s Botanic Garden. If you haven’t been for a while take the family. It’s looking amazing right now. One of our suppliers, Green Gallery Nursery supplied all the plants for “The Caylx”. This glasshouse inside the gardens has the most amazing display of foliage plants. It’s free to get in and it’s worth the train trip.
Check out the Aloes flowering outside The Conservatory of Music too.
Come and see us this weekend.
Our nursery has never looked better.
Check out Karyn’s Gardens out the front. They are all planted up now with spring flowering seedlings. See how she does it.
We are trialling Stay Mulch Hemp on one of the flower gardens. It looks better than Sugarcane and lasts twice as long.
Simon has mulched his native garden at home with Hemp and he loves it.
We stock it if you’d like to try it.
I’m back on Sunday so you can talk to me too.
Happy gardening
Tim
