Have you ever grown Chinese Cabbage? - Mar 31, 2017

Dear gardening friends

Everything's growing so fast !!!
My dogs gone missing. I'm hoping if I mow the lawn she might turn up.
If you've ever thought about planting something in your garden, do it now.
The growing conditions are perfect, so if you plant trees, shrubs and flowers now, they are going to grow.

Tibouchinas are flowering around Macarthur. The most popular variety is the one above, called Tibouchina Alstonville. It was bred by a famous nurseryman called Ken Dunstan who lived in Alstonville. He loved this small growing tree so much he donated plants to the Alstonville council and they planted them everywhere. If you've ever been to Alstonville then you will have seen these amazing trees covered in dark purple flowers. Ken also bred a smaller growing variety called Tibouchina Jules but this is much harder to grow.

A Queensland Nurseryman called Terry Keogh has bred smaller growing Tibouchinas that are more suitable for tiny gardens and they flower much longer. He must be a Groovy kind of guy, because he called his dwarf Tibouchina "Groovy Baby". It only grows one metre high and it flowers throughout the warmer months. He also bred a white flowering compact variety called "Peace Baby". We have these groovy varieties so come and check them out.

One of my favourite Tibouchinas isn't small or tall. It's called Tibouchina Jazzie and it gets smothered in purple flowers from spring through to autumn. It grows fence height, so it can be used to screen out your neighbours. We have bushy plants covered in buds and flowers now from $15.99. Tibouchinas love rich soil and lots of water during summer. If you don't water your garden in summer then don't plant one because the leaves will always look burnt.

A new Grevillea arrived this week called "Scarlet Moon". Simon took one home to add to his 80+ collection. The native birds really love Simons garden. Grevillea "Scarlet Moon" grows 1.6 metres high by 1.6 metres wide. The breeder must have been an engineer to come up with these dimensions! It flowers all year round and it is a lovely colour. We have limited stock this week so if you want one start jogging. Plants cost $28.99 less your Tim's Garden Club Discount.

Have you ever grown Chinese Cabbage?
This fast growing vegetable is such good value because it's jam packed with crunchy leaves that taste delicious in a salad. It's easy to grow during the cooler months. We have punnets in the nursery. Simply dig Tim's Cow Manure into your soil then plant the seedlings thru the Sugar cane mulch.
They grow so fast you will be eating them in just 6 weeks!!!! Pick the first couple when they are small so your fridge doesn't get over loaded.

It's also time to plant Kale in your veggie patch. This heirloom vegetable with grey or green leaves is full of antioxidants. It's only just been discovered by healthy people who eat it cooked, raw, and in liquid drinks. I like it best chopped up fine and eaten as a salad. It's so good for you, and it's easy to grow. It's so Arty looking you can grow it in your front garden or even in pots!!!
Simply remove the lower leaves to eat. Don't pull it out. Kale will produce leaves right up to Christmas. We have seedlings here ready to plant now.

What ever you do don't try and grow it in cheap shitty Potting mix. We've done another trial on a Potting Mix sold by "the fresh food people" and look at the results!
These lettuce seedlings were planted on the same day from the same punnet.

At Tim's Garden Centre we don't want to sell you a $3.50 Potting mix. We want you to love gardening like we do so we want you to have success. Tim's Best Potting mix is now even better. We've added more fertiliser so your herbs, veggies, flowers, shrubs and indoor plants will really pop!!!

If you are buying cheap Potting mix, thinking you are saving money, then have a look at the results.

Pig's gone to the Camden Show today.
He won Wood chopping last year and Best Sponge Cake. There's nothing Pig can't do.

After you've mowed the lawn this weekend come and see us. We will help you have a beautiful garden.
Happy gardening
Tim
