My green lawn went missing overnight?? - Apr 01, 2016
Dear Gardening Friends,
So much drama this week because Simon's lawn got attacked by Army Worms. Simon loves his lawn so when he woke up in the morning and discovered this huge dead patch we all heard about it.
The grubs hide under the thatch during the day then come out at night to eat your lawn. Simon says that the grubs are very hard to spot because they are so small but they leave behind green balls of poo!!! His lawn has now been treated successfully with a pesticide so come and talk to Simon for advice and a bit of drama.
We are getting ready for our Garden RELEAF which starts next weekend. This fun event hopes to raise awareness about the benefits of gardening while helping to raise money for Beyondblue. Scientists have discovered that if you spend just 10 minutes a day in your garden you will be happier.
If you buy a Beyondblue Blueberry we will donate your $20.00 to Beyondblue. We have donated 50 plants to the cause and we hope to raise $1,000.00 but we need your help.
Blueberries are easy to grow in big pots using Tims Best Potting Mix. The pot needs to be big enough to hold at least 2 bags.
Place your pot in a sunny spot and water your Beyondblue Blueberry plant almost daily for best results. These plants will flower during Winter and produce sweet tasting berries this Spring. If you ever have to move house you can take your Blueberry with you.
We also have Beyondblue wrist bands for just $5.00 at the counter. Wear it for a month and everyone will know that you supported Beyondblue. Simon has been wearing his for 12 months so they really are good quality rubber!
We are all making an effort to celebrate gardening and what you can do in the backyard
On Saturday the 9th of April our apprentice Jole Besters will be talking to you about "Caring for Cactus" at 10am. Jole has over 300 Cacti in his private collection so he knows how to grow these prickly plants.
Simon has over 80 Grevillea's in his garden at Ruse so he knows which varieties flower the best. He also knows which varieties the birds love the most. "Simon's World of Grevillea's" talk starts at 11am.
If you want to learn about "Growing Winter Vegetables" come and listen to my talk at 3pm. Vegetables are easier to grow during the cooler months.
On Sunday the 10th of April we have invited some of our friends to help you have fun in the garden.
Helen Russell will telling you "How to care for Chickens" at 10am. Home grown eggs just taste so much better. Chickens are great bug catchers too. Bring the kids for this talk.
At 11am members from Campbelltown Bonsai Society will talk to you about caring for Bonsai plants. These potted plants are perfectly suited for today's tiny gardens.
At 2pm "Caroline The Bee Lady" will talk to you about keeping bees in your backyard. We had a huge response the last time Macarthur Bee Keepers came to our nursery.
Caroline has the new hive to show you that makes getting the honey out so much easier!!!
Of course we will be auctioning Blue Pig again this year on Ebay and all funds raised will be donated to Beyondblue. If you own a business in Macarthur then Blue Pig could be a great investment. Put him on your counter to remind customers that you supported such a great cause. Blue Pig will go up for auction from next Monday.
There is a Jasmine plant that you have probably never heard of. It's called Jasmine Sambac and it grows more like a shrub than a vine and it flowers throughout the warmer months. Perfect in a pot or garden it has amazing white perfumed flowers that will make your nose smile! We have some beauties in the shade house. It grows in full sun or part shade.
Poor pig overdosed on Easter Eggs last week. Pig's very good friends with the Easter Bunny. We almost had to get his tummy pumped! We have surrounded him with Pansy plants now and he's making a remarkable recovery. Flowers do make you happy.
Come and see us if you're feeling blue as the weather gets cooler. We have the remedy.
Happy Gardening
Tim
