The cameras are watching you! - Mar 06, 2016
Dear Gardening Friends,
A big thank you to everyone who got involved with our protest march down Queen St yesterday. Campbelltown Council chopped down 16 healthy shade trees overnight last week then re paved the area so nobody would notice.
The trees were removed according to Council because the roots were lifting pavers but on our walk yesterday we noticed no pavers were lifting around the Magnolias that are still remaining. We also noticed that the trees that have been removed were between the new security cameras that have just been installed.
I spoke to Councillor Fred Borg latter in the afternoon and he assured me that the remaining Magnolia grandifloras would be safe. Fred was sitting in the shade of the Palm trees along Queen St having coffee with a friend. Trees attract people on hot days so it only makes sense that more trees should be planted in Queen St when it's upgraded.
If you would like to plant a shade tree in your garden to help replace the ones that have gone missing in Queen Street come and see us. My 11 year old son Dan, has been rescuing Jacaranda seedlings for the last 12 months. These seedlings pop up in the mulch during wet seasons in parks and gardens around Macarthur. They would normally be sprayed with weed killer. Dan has rescued 150 trees!
Dan has potted these trees up into 150mm pots and he has watered and fertilised them.
The trees are now ready to be planted as street trees or park trees. Jacarandas grow well in Macarthur. Dan is selling the trees for just $5.00 each to cover potting mix and water costs and they are available at the nursery. We would normally sell these for $15.99.
Perhaps your kids School or your local park could use a few nice shade trees?
A Guerrilla tree planting is very rewarding.
I have been watching a pot plant flowering on a sunny patio all year on my way to work. Today I stopped to take a photo to share with you. Euphorbia Lipstick is in the succulent family so it thrives on neglect. Even brown thumbs can get this plant to grow!
If you have been to Thailand then you will have seen these plants flowering in pots and gardens at the front door. Thai people believe that this plant will bring them wealth and happiness. Perhaps this could work for you too? They grow best in pots on sunny patios that get protection from frost. Stop watering them in winter and they will continue to flower non stop! We have plants available now.
Pansies have arrived in potted colour. Pansies really do make your garden smile. They will make you smile too!
Grow them in pots or gardens in sunny spots and they will flower from now until late October. How good is that? They are cheap to buy. 4 for $12.00.
Dig some Planting Compost into your pots or gardens to give them the best start in life. Potted colour needs to be watered every day until plants become established. This is very important.
Pig has been reminding Campbelltown Council that our Green City might not be that green after all.
I hope you're spending some time in the garden this weekend.
Come and see us if you need advice.
Happy Gardening
