Time to spray Bindii!!!! - Aug 06, 2016
Dear Gardening Friends,
It has been so cold and wet here this week poor Pig chucked a sickie. We ran a competition on Facebook to see who could come up with the best excuse for Pig and Narelle Barr won with "Pig's Gone to Rio!" We had a huge response from our followers with almost 80 comments. Narelle won a Tim's Fast Food Fertiliser and we put her sign on display.
I noticed that Bindii and Clover has started to grow in Dan's school playground. It's time to spray your lawn before the Bindii goes to seed.
Clover has also started to grow. This broadleaf weed has a long tap root that allows it to thrive in poor soils. The bees love clover, so if you let it grow, your kids will get stung on the feet by bees in spring. The bees sting dogs and cats too!
If you don't own a sprayer come and see us. We have a new 5litre sprayer for just $18.99. We use "Richgro Bindii & Weed Killer for Lawns" to control Clover and Bindii. This is safe to use on all types of grass including Soft Leaf Buffalo. Spray twice in 7-10 days to kill most broadleaf weeds. Add a squirt of detergent to the water for best results. Don't mow for 7 days before or after spraying. If you only spray once the Clover will come back.
Our Daphne plants are bursting into bloom. These old world fragrant plants grow beautifully in a pot, in an eastern facing position. They have glossy green leaves and highly perfumed white and pink flowers from now till spring. There have been many new varieties released but I'm starting to think that the original Daphne odora is still the best!
A highly perfumed Camellia has arrived this week. It's called Camellia "High Fragrance". You often hear Graham Ross talking about this Camellia on 2GBs Garden Clinic. This glossy green leaf variety has beautiful pink flowers with a sweet fragrance that's almost as strong as Jasmine. It can be used as a hedging plant or simply plant one in your garden and enjoy the perfume.
Camellias are also very good pot plants. Use Tim's Best Potting mix.
We got a big surprise last week when one of our Agave burst into bloom. Have you ever seen a flower spike like this? None of the other Agaves have flowered so this one must be a bit special. Even I have flower envy!
Apparently this plant will die once it finishes flowering.
If you like Cymbidium Orchids you will love our Orchid display in the shop.
We have over 20 plants all covered in flowers. Orchids make amazing flowering gifts and they cost about the same as cut flowers from the florist. We can gift wrap them for you too.
Don't forget that we also have baby Orchid plants in a plastic bubbles for just $12.99. These are fun to grow for the more experienced gardener.
