Happiness can be found in your garden

Dear gardening friends

Everybody knows that flowers make you happy, but now scientists have actually proved it. If you have pretty flowers in your life then you will be up to 8% happier!

Our busy lives means we are less likely to have flowers in our gardens. This makes our gardens look sad and makes us feel even sadder. Luckily nursery’s have come up with an easy solution.

Potted colour are advanced seedlings that have been grown on by us until they are in flower. Now you can buy these plants and use them in pots, hanging baskets and gardens in sunny spots to get instant satisfaction.

Pansies are some of the easiest to grow annuals on the planet. The pretty flowers have faces that will make you smile.
If you plant them now they will flower non stop until November.

Use or Tim’s Best Potting Mix if you are growing them in pots. If you are growing them in your garden then improve the soil first with our IGC Planting Compost.
This fantastic product has an Organic Fertiliser, Seaweed, Wetting Agent and Rich Compost. It makes your Pansies grow twice as big, so you get twice as many flowers!

Johnny Jump Ups are related to Pansies.
These little cuties have tiny purple and yellow flowers that are just so weather proof. They spread along the ground and flower non stop for the next 6 months.
They are so easy to grow and once you plant some they usually pop up the next year and give you free plants!!!!!

We have them in punnets now in our seedling area. Ask Lisa to help you find them. We also have Violas in potted colour.

Johnny Jump Up flowers are edible so you can put them in your salads for an amazing effect. You can also put the tiny flowers in your ice cubes for fun.
Now is the best time to plant them while we are getting this fantastic rain.

The health benefits of kale go well beyond providing a truckload of vitamins and minerals; this superfood is packed with phytonutrients such as glucosinolates and flavonoids as well. Thanks to its broad nutritional profile, kale is thought to help fight cardiovascular disease, asthma, and rheumatoid arthritis; to prevent several types of cancer and pre-mature aging of the skin; and to promote the health of the urinary tract.

Kale is a nutritional powerhouse packed with Antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta carotene, kaempferol and quercentin.

Kale has one of the highest ORAC ratings.
Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity measures the foods ability to scavenge for free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause damage to your body at the cellular level.

Kale is bloody easy to grow!
I planted the Tuscan Kale and a new variety called Kale Sprout a couple of weeks ago.
Kale Sprout is a cross between Kale and Brussels Sprouts. You eat the leaves in salad or steam them for a couple of minutes and eat it as a vegetable.

Plant Kale now in your veggie patch or in pots. Use our Tim’s Best Potting Mix for great results.

Simply remove the bottom leaves to eat, as it grows. Don’t pull the plants out!
They will produce leaves constantly from now until spring. We have the full range of Kale in the seedling area. Talk to Lisa if you need help.

Caterpillars love Super Foods too so make sure you Dust the leaves with Yates Tomato and Vegetable Dust. Apply every 4 weeks and it will control the caterpillars without killing you!

Don’t forget the snail pellets. Snails love Super Food too and they are having a party after the recent rain. Multiguard Snail and Slug pellets are safe to use around your pets, birds and lizards. We sell these earth friendly products.

Other vegetable seedlings you can grow now include Beetroot, Broadbeans, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chinese Cabbage, Onions, Peas, Kales, Leeks, Silverbeet, Spinach to name a few.

Please shop with us because the chain stores still have out of season seedlings on their benches that will be killed by the frost if you plant them now. A customer recently planted Sweet Potatoes that he bought at the chain store. These have to be planted in spring?

We are raising money for Beyond Blue again. If you buy a Blue Berry plant from us we will donate $10.00 to Beyond Blue.
It’s all part of Garden RELEAF. Keep Saturday the 14th free so you can join in the fun.

We have had beautiful rain so you have no excuses now. It’s time to get out in your garden. Fertilise your lawn. Plant some Pansies, plants some Kale.
Happy gardening
Tim
